1999 Outstanding Student in Two-Year Program
Three Outstanding Students in two-year programs were honored in spring 1999 ceremonies at their campuses.
Wildlife Technology Program
Patrick McElhenny
McElhenny grew up in Lancaster and prior to Penn State, he attended Mansfield University, Harrisburg Community College, and Millersville University. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 10 years.
He is a member of the Quittapahila Audubon Society, the North American Butterfly Association, the American Birding Association, and Ducks Unlimited.
As a long-time supporter of the Nature Conservancy, McElhenny has served two internships for ecological monitoring with the conservancy in 1998 and 1999. He has been a nature weekend/fish biology educator for the National Wildlife Foundation and is a former board member, field trip leader, and bird count participant with the Lancaster County Bird Club.
Forest Technology Program
Staci Lynnea Grimes
Grimes was a returning student who continued her education after working in the western United States and studying at Shippensburg University. She is a single parent with a five-year-old son, Adrian.
Grimes graduated in May with an associate of science degree in forest technology and at the top of her class with an impressive 3.98 GPA. She worked in the campus Learning Center as a tutor for freshman forestry students, was president of the Mont Alto Forestry Club, a Lion Ambassador, and a member of the campus Student Activities Fee Allocation Committee. In 1998, she received the Award for Academic Achievement in Forestry.
Golf Course Turfgrass Management Program
Jonathan R. Stahl
Stahl is a 1992 graduate of Waterford Union High School in Wisconsin. He holds a bachelor of science degree in managerial accounting and business administration from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Stahl has worked for the Stevens Point Country Club and most recently worked as the golf course superintendent for Waupaca Country Club in Wisconsin. He holds memberships in the Wisconsin Turfgrass Association and the Northern Great Lakes Golf Course Superintendents Association.
In 1998, Stahl received a Golf Course Superintendents Association Scholarship, and in 1999 he received a Trans-Mississippi Golf Association Scholarship.
Stahl made the Academic Honor Roll at the University of Wisconsin for three semesters and the Academic Highest Honors for two semesters.
